When is laser hair removal recommended for Becker nevus?

A Becker nevus is a usually long-standing patch that can become darker or more noticeable and may develop thicker hair. The laser target is the hair follicle, not the nevus itself. Because the patch contains more pigment than nearby skin, the choice of device and settings needs individual assessment. Laser treatment does not diagnose, remove, or reliably lighten the birthmark.

A clinician may first document the patch and check for changes in colour, border, texture, or symptoms. A recent change, an uncertain diagnosis, or irritated skin can make hair removal unsuitable until the lesion has been reviewed.

Arrange a consultation with a dermatologist or suitably trained laser clinician. Tell them about tanning, medicines that increase light sensitivity, previous reactions, and any history of pigment changes after skin injury. Do not pluck or wax the hair immediately before a planned session, because the follicle is the treatment target; follow the clinic's preparation instructions instead.

Ask whether a small test area is appropriate, how the nevus will be protected or monitored, and what temporary redness or pigment change could occur. Protect the area from strong sun around treatment and report persistent blistering, crusting, or a marked colour change.

Have the Becker nevus examined promptly if it changes quickly, bleeds without an obvious injury, becomes persistently sore or itchy, develops a new lump, or forms a non-healing crust. These features need assessment before cosmetic hair removal. Seek urgent help for severe swelling, spreading redness, fever, or intense pain after a procedure.
