Why torsion needs prompt assessment

Ovarian torsion occurs when the ovary twists around supporting tissues and can reduce its blood supply. A cyst or enlarged ovary may contribute to the twisting. Laparoscopy lets the surgical team inspect the ovary, release the twist, and judge its appearance. If a cyst is causing the problem, cystectomy may be performed when it is safe and the ovarian tissue can be protected. Sometimes the operation needs to be adapted according to blood flow, tissue condition, bleeding, or the possibility of another diagnosis.

What to do if torsion is suspected

Do not wait for a routine scan or clinic appointment if symptoms suggest torsion.
