When is knee bracing recommended for an ACL tear?

Short answer
Knee bracing may be recommended after an ACL tear when added support is needed for instability, protection during rehabilitation, or selected activities.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Purpose
- External support during selected stages of rehabilitation
- Still needed
- Strength, balance, range-of-motion, and activity progression
What the brace can and cannot do
The ACL helps limit forward movement and rotation of the shin. A hinged brace may provide external support when the knee feels unstable, after an injury, or during a staged return to activity. It does not heal a torn ligament or replace strength, balance, and movement training. The suitable design and timing depend on whether the tear is partial or complete, whether other structures are injured, and whether surgery is planned.
Using a brace safely
Have a clinician fit the brace and show you how firmly it should sit. Check the skin and circulation after wearing it, and report numbness, tingling, rubbing, or increased swelling. Keep doing the prescribed exercises for thigh strength, control, and range of motion. Do not use the brace as permission to return suddenly to pivoting sports or uneven ground.
When to seek care
Seek prompt assessment if the knee gives way repeatedly, becomes very swollen, cannot fully move, or you cannot bear weight. A cold or pale foot, new numbness, or severe pain under a brace requires urgent attention. Reassessment is also sensible when the brace no longer controls symptoms or interferes with exercise.
Questions for your clinician
Ask which brace is suitable, when to wear it, how it fits with surgery decisions, and which strength or balance milestones should come before higher-risk activity.

Questions people ask
Can a brace repair an ACL tear?
No. It can support the knee externally, but it does not reconnect or heal a torn ligament.
Should I wear it all day?
Not automatically. Follow the wearing schedule provided for your injury and activity, and remove it for skin and circulation checks as advised.
