When is joint aspiration recommended for knee bursitis?

Knee bursitis is inflammation of a fluid sac that cushions tissues around the knee. A clinician may use a needle to remove fluid from the affected bursa, often after examining the skin and the swelling. Testing can help identify infection, blood, or crystals when the cause is unclear. Drainage may ease pressure, but repeated kneeling, friction, injury, or inflammation can make the bursa enlarge again.

Arrange an examination rather than pressing on or puncturing the swelling. Tell the clinician about fever, skin breaks, recent kneeling, a blow to the knee, immune conditions, and medicines that affect bleeding. After the procedure, keep the site covered as directed, reduce pressure on the knee, and follow the activity plan. A follow-up may be needed to address the trigger.

Get prompt assessment for a hot or red knee swelling, fever, chills, drainage, or pain that is rapidly worsening. These features can occur with an infected bursa and should not be managed by home drainage. After aspiration, seek advice for spreading redness, persistent bleeding, increasing swelling, or severe pain.
