When is IV fluid therapy recommended for gastroenteritis?

Gastroenteritis causes inflammation in the stomach or bowel and commonly brings vomiting, loose stools, cramps, and sometimes fever. The danger is fluid and electrolyte loss. A healthcare professional checks the person’s general state, pulse, blood pressure, urine, ability to drink, and continuing losses. IV replacement can support circulation when oral rehydration is not enough. It does not automatically mean the illness is severe, and it does not replace advice about infection control or treatment of the underlying cause.

Use small, frequent sips of oral rehydration solution when swallowing is safe. After vomiting, restart gradually instead of taking a large drink. Rest, keep track of urine, and avoid sharing towels or preparing food for others while infectious symptoms continue. Contact a clinician if symptoms persist, drinking becomes difficult, or the person has a condition that makes fluid balance harder to manage.

Arrange urgent assessment for confusion, fainting, severe drowsiness, very little urine, inability to retain fluids, severe or localized abdominal pain, blood in vomit or stool, or a clear decline in condition. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and those with kidney or heart disease may need earlier review.
