When is IV fluid therapy recommended for food poisoning?

Food poisoning can irritate the stomach and bowel, leading to repeated vomiting, diarrhoea, or both. IV fluids deliver water and salts through a vein when the digestive tract cannot retain enough replacement. A clinician will look at alertness, circulation, urine output, mouth dryness, and the pattern of ongoing losses. Treatment may also involve testing, anti-vomiting medicine, or targeted treatment depending on the suspected cause; a drip supports hydration but does not remove the infection itself.

Take small sips of oral rehydration solution or clear fluids if you can keep them down. Pause briefly after vomiting, then restart with small amounts rather than drinking a large volume at once. Avoid preparing food for others while diarrhoea or vomiting continues, wash hands carefully, and record urine output and any blood in stool. A clinician should assess persistent symptoms or people who are vulnerable to dehydration.

Seek urgent care for fainting, confusion, severe weakness, inability to keep fluids down, very little urine, blood in stool or vomit, severe abdominal pain, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Prompt assessment is also sensible for young children, older adults, pregnancy, or significant kidney, heart, or immune problems.

Ask whether the illness appears to need testing, which fluids are safest, whether medicines are appropriate, and what change in vomiting, stool, urine, or pain should trigger reassessment.
