When is IUI recommended for unexplained infertility?

Unexplained infertility means the initial assessment has not found a clear reason for difficulty conceiving. That assessment commonly considers ovulation, the fallopian tubes and semen. It does not mean that conception is impossible or that no further information can be gathered.

IUI places prepared sperm in the uterus close to ovulation. It can reduce the effect of timing and sperm travel, while ovarian stimulation may be discussed in selected cases. The choice depends on age, ovarian reserve, time trying to conceive, previous treatment and personal preferences.

Ask the clinician to explain which tests have been completed and whether any result needs repeating. Confirm that at least one tube is open and that ovulation can be tracked. If IUI is planned, the team will usually coordinate ovulation monitoring, sperm preparation and the insemination appointment.

Discuss whether a natural-cycle or stimulated approach is appropriate, what monitoring involves, and how the plan will change if pregnancy does not occur. A shared plan can prevent repeated treatment without a clear review point.

Book fertility advice when conception has taken longer than expected, especially if periods are irregular, there is a history of pelvic infection or surgery, or semen concerns are present. Seek urgent care for severe pelvic pain, fainting or heavy bleeding; these symptoms are not routine signs to wait out during fertility treatment.

Which causes have been assessed? Are my tubes open? Is IUI preferable to continuing timed intercourse? Would stimulation add benefit or risk? How will ovulation be monitored, and when will we review the plan?
