When is steroid injection into the skin recommended for keloid scars?

A keloid is scar tissue that grows beyond the original injury. Injecting corticosteroid into the thickened scar may reduce inflammation, soften the tissue, flatten its surface, and ease itching or pain. A dermatologist assesses the scar’s borders, firmness, symptoms, location, and growth before choosing this approach.

Keloids often need a planned course of care rather than a single procedure. Silicone products, pressure, freezing, laser treatment, surgery, or other measures may be considered, sometimes in combination. Removing a keloid alone can allow it to return, so prevention of regrowth should be discussed.

Arrange a dermatology assessment and explain when the scar began changing, whether it extends beyond the wound, and how it affects sleep, movement, clothing, or confidence. Mention previous procedures and whether you or close relatives develop raised scars.
