When is steroid injection recommended for a skin cyst?

An epidermoid cyst is a sac beneath the skin that can contain keratin. If its wall becomes inflamed, the area may swell, redden and hurt. Injected steroid can reduce inflammation around a selected cyst, especially when there is no clear need for immediate drainage. It does not reliably remove the cyst wall, so the lump may return if the sac remains.

A painful lump is not automatically an epidermoid cyst. A clinician may check for an abscess, another type of cyst or a skin growth before choosing treatment. The site, size, inflammation, drainage and your general health all influence whether injection, observation, drainage or later removal is appropriate.

Have a new, growing or repeatedly inflamed lump examined rather than squeezing it. Tell the clinician about drainage, fever, diabetes, immune problems, allergies and medicines. Do not pierce the cyst at home. If injection is chosen, follow wound-care advice and watch for increasing redness, drainage or skin thinning. A later procedure may be discussed if the cyst keeps returning or remains troublesome.

Seek prompt care if the lump becomes rapidly larger, hot, intensely painful, foul-smelling or heavily draining, or if you develop fever or feel unwell. A cyst near the eye, nose or mouth deserves early review. Breathing difficulty or facial swelling after treatment needs emergency help.

Ask whether the lump is an epidermoid cyst or an abscess, whether injection is likely to settle the inflammation, and whether the cyst wall will remain. Ask when drainage or removal would be considered, how recurrence will be managed, and which warning signs should bring you back sooner.
