When is immunotherapy recommended for mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining around organs, most often the lining of the chest. Immunotherapy helps the immune system recognise and attack cancer cells. The choice depends on whether the disease is pleural or affects another lining, whether it can be removed, and what scans show about its spread.

Treatment may be given alone or alongside other systemic medicines. Your team considers autoimmune illness, organ function, medicines that suppress immunity, and previous cancer treatment because these can change the balance of benefit and side effects.

Ask how the plan fits your scan results and whether surgery, chemotherapy, or a combination is also being considered. Share every medicine and supplement, including steroids, and mention inflammatory or autoimmune conditions. Before each dose, report new cough, breathlessness, diarrhoea, rash, fever, unusual tiredness, or changes in urine. These symptoms can signal inflammation in an organ and may need prompt assessment.

Contact your oncology team promptly for worsening breathlessness, chest pain, persistent vomiting or diarrhoea, severe abdominal pain, confusion, marked weakness, or a new widespread rash. Seek emergency help for severe difficulty breathing, fainting, sudden confusion, or swelling of the face or throat. Do not wait for the next infusion if symptoms are rapidly worsening.
