When is immunotherapy recommended for liver cancer?

Liver cancer treatment depends on the tumour's location and extent, liver function and whether cirrhosis or another liver condition is present. Surgery, ablation or a liver-directed procedure may be considered when the disease is limited. Immunotherapy is more often discussed when cancer has spread or when local treatment is not enough. It may be used alone or with another systemic medicine. The team also considers previous treatments, autoimmune conditions, transplant history and medicines that could change immune-related risks.

Bring a full medicine list and tell the team about hepatitis, cirrhosis, jaundice, autoimmune disease, previous transplant and steroid use. Ask how your liver tests will be followed and what result would lead to a pause or change in treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines without advice. Report new symptoms early, especially changes in bowel habits, skin, breathing, urine or energy.

Call promptly about worsening yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting or diarrhoea, unusual bleeding, confusion, a new cough or breathing trouble. Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, fainting, severe confusion or rapidly worsening symptoms. Liver problems and treatment effects can overlap, so assessment is needed rather than waiting for the next appointment.
