When is imiquimod treatment recommended for warts?

Imiquimod is a prescription cream that helps activate local immune activity in the skin. A dermatologist may consider it when a wart is suitable for topical treatment, when other approaches have not helped enough, or when the wart’s position makes another procedure less suitable.

The cream is applied to the wart according to an individual schedule. The treated area can become red, irritated, tender, scaly, or crusted as the skin responds. These changes should be discussed with the prescriber if they are severe or make everyday activities difficult. Imiquimod is not appropriate for every bump, so the diagnosis should be confirmed before use.
