When Is Imiquimod Treatment Recommended for Basal Cell Carcinoma?

Basal cell carcinoma is a skin cancer that can look like a shiny bump, scaly patch, sore, or area that repeatedly crusts or bleeds. Imiquimod works at the skin surface and is therefore reserved for selected superficial tumours after diagnosis. It is not suitable for every basal cell carcinoma or for a lesion whose depth and edges have not been assessed.

Location matters because lesions near the eyes, nose, lips, ears, or other sensitive structures may need a different approach. A biopsy or other specialist assessment may be needed to confirm the subtype and plan treatment.

Attend the recommended dermatology review and use the cream exactly as prescribed. Keep a record of application days, protect the area from unnecessary sun, and avoid picking crusts or adding unapproved products. Irritation, redness, soreness, and crusting may occur during treatment, but the clinician must confirm that the tumour has responded.

Do not assume that a quieter-looking surface means the cancer has gone. Keep every follow-up appointment and report missed applications, severe reactions, or a lesion that remains raised, thick, bleeding, or tender.

Contact the treating team promptly for severe pain, marked swelling, spreading inflammation, eye symptoms, or a reaction that makes normal activities difficult. Seek timely review for renewed bleeding, ulceration, growth, or a persistent abnormal area after treatment.
