Short answer

Hysterectomy may be recommended for selected cervical cancers when the tumour is confined enough for surgery and removing the uterus is part of the planned treatment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main decision
Whether surgery can remove the known cancer appropriately.
May involve
The uterus, cervix, nearby tissue, or lymph nodes.
Alternatives
Radiotherapy and chemotherapy may be used in some situations.

How the decision is made

The cancer's size, position, spread, and type guide the operation. The surgeon may remove the uterus and cervix, and sometimes nearby tissues or lymph nodes. A more extensive operation may be considered when cancer reaches tissues beside the cervix. Some cervical cancers are treated with radiotherapy and chemotherapy instead, so surgery is not suitable for every person.

Planning before an operation

Ask which organs and tissues would be removed, how the operation may affect fertility, periods, sexual function, and recovery, and whether additional treatment is expected. Share medicines, allergies, previous operations, and fertility wishes with the team. Arrange practical help for the early recovery period.

After treatment or while waiting

Report heavy vaginal bleeding, fever, worsening abdominal pain, foul-smelling discharge, difficulty passing urine, or a wound that becomes red or opens. Seek urgent care for severe bleeding, fainting, chest pain, or sudden breathing difficulty.

Questions to ask

Ask what stage and examination findings make surgery appropriate, whether lymph nodes or nearby tissues are involved, what alternatives exist, how fertility can be addressed, and which warning signs require immediate contact.

Questions people ask

Does a hysterectomy treat every cervical cancer?

No. Suitability depends on tumour features and spread; other treatments may be more appropriate.

Can fertility be preserved?

A hysterectomy removes the uterus, so pregnancy cannot be carried afterward; ask about options before treatment begins.
