When is an HPV test recommended for HPV infection?

The test looks for high-risk types of human papillomavirus in cells collected from the cervix. A positive result means HPV was detected; it does not by itself show cancer or tell exactly when the infection began. HPV can clear without treatment, so clinicians interpret the result with your age, screening history, and any cell changes.
