When is hip arthroscopy recommended for hip labral tear?

The labrum is a ring of tissue around the hip socket that helps with joint stability and smooth movement. A tear may be considered for surgery when groin pain, catching, clicking, or restricted movement continues despite an appropriate rehabilitation plan. During arthroscopy, the surgeon inspects the joint and may repair or trim the labrum, while also treating an underlying shape problem when present. A tear seen on imaging may not be the sole cause of pain.

Record which positions provoke symptoms, such as deep flexion, twisting, or prolonged sitting. Discuss physiotherapy, activity modification, and pain relief with your clinician. Before surgery, ask about crutches, movement restrictions, sleep, work, sport, and the rehabilitation sequence, since the plan differs between repair and trimming.

Seek assessment for recurring groin pain with catching or loss of hip motion that interferes with ordinary activities. After an injury, urgent review is needed if you cannot bear weight, have severe escalating pain, or develop numbness, weakness, or a cold-looking foot.
