When is HER2-targeted therapy recommended for stomach cancer?

HER2 is a growth signal found on some stomach cancer cells. Tissue from an endoscopy or operation can be tested, and an uncertain result may need further laboratory assessment. The recommendation depends on whether the cancer can be removed, whether it has spread, the person’s general health, and other tumour features. HER2-directed treatment is usually one part of a wider oncology plan.

Ask the treating team to explain the HER2 result and whether the sample was adequate for testing. Discuss the aim of treatment, how it fits with chemotherapy or surgery, and how nutrition, swallowing, weight change, and other symptoms will be supported. Share all medicines and any history of heart problems before treatment begins.

Call the oncology team promptly for worsening swallowing, repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, fever, new breathlessness, chest discomfort, or marked weakness. Emergency help is needed for severe breathing difficulty, confusion, collapse, or vomiting blood. These symptoms need assessment regardless of whether targeted therapy has started.
