When is a hearing test recommended for earwax buildup?

Earwax can block sound from reaching the eardrum and create a temporary muffled sensation, ringing, or a feeling of fullness. A clinician may first examine the ear and manage the blockage. Testing before the canal is clear may not show your usual hearing. If difficulty continues afterwards, a hearing assessment can show whether there is a separate problem affecting the outer, middle, or inner ear.

Arrange an ear examination if you notice new or worsening hearing difficulty. Do not insert cotton buds, hairpins, or other objects into the canal. Use only an earwax treatment advised for you, especially if you have ear tubes, a damaged eardrum, previous ear surgery, pain, or discharge. Ask whether the ear should be cleared before the hearing test and whether both ears need comparison.

Seek prompt medical care for sudden hearing loss, severe ear pain, fever, blood or pus from the ear, marked dizziness, or new facial weakness. These features should not be assumed to be simple earwax. A clinician can decide whether urgent assessment is needed and whether a hearing test should wait until another problem has been addressed.
