When is hair transplant recommended for traction alopecia?

Traction alopecia follows repeated tension from hairstyles, extensions, headwear, or grooming practices. Early changes may improve when traction is removed, while long-standing inflammation can damage follicles and leave a smooth or scarred area. A transplant is considered only after the scalp has been examined and the pattern is no longer changing. It cannot make a continuing source of traction safe.

Stop painful or tightly pulling styles and use low-tension alternatives while the scalp is assessed. A clinician may examine the hairline, temples, or other affected zones and check for inflammation or scarring. Book an assessment if hairline thinning persists after traction stops, or if there is tenderness, crusting, redness, scaling, or a shiny area with few visible openings.
