When is an H. pylori breath test recommended for gastritis?

Gastritis means irritation or inflammation of the stomach lining. H. pylori is a bacterium that can live in the stomach and may contribute to inflammation, indigestion, upper abdominal discomfort, nausea, or ulcer disease. Symptoms alone cannot confirm the infection. A breath test detects activity associated with H. pylori and can help a clinician choose whether eradication treatment is appropriate.

Tell your clinician about antibiotics, acid-suppressing medicines, bismuth products, and other treatments because some can affect test accuracy. Do not stop prescribed medicine without instructions. Follow the clinic's fasting and timing directions, and explain whether symptoms improved or returned after earlier treatment.
