When is growth scan recommended for polyhydramnios?

Polyhydramnios means there is more amniotic fluid than expected for the stage of pregnancy. Ultrasound can estimate the baby’s size, assess fluid and review the baby’s position. Depending on the situation, the team may also examine anatomy or blood flow and discuss possible reasons for the fluid finding. The scan schedule varies with the severity of the finding, gestational age, symptoms and results from previous appointments.

Attend the recommended ultrasound and antenatal checks, and keep track of any instructions about fetal movements. Report breathlessness that is new or worsening, abdominal enlargement that becomes uncomfortable, fluid leakage, bleeding or contractions. Ask what the result means for monitoring and birth planning. Do not assume that a repeat scan is needed on the same timetable for every pregnancy.

Seek urgent maternity assessment for leaking fluid, vaginal bleeding, regular contractions, severe abdominal pain or a noticeable reduction in fetal movements. Get immediate help for marked breathlessness, chest pain, fainting or feeling suddenly very unwell. These symptoms should be assessed without waiting for a routine growth scan.
