When is growth scan recommended for oligohydramnios?

Oligohydramnios means there is less amniotic fluid than expected for the stage of pregnancy. Ultrasound can measure fluid, estimate the baby’s growth and examine blood flow when required. A single result is interpreted alongside your pregnancy stage, membranes, placenta, fetal movements and other clinical checks. The scan helps clinicians decide whether observation, more frequent monitoring or additional assessment is appropriate; it does not by itself determine the cause.

Follow the appointment schedule given by your maternity team and attend any repeat ultrasound or monitoring visits. Tell the team about fluid leakage, contractions, bleeding, pain or a change in fetal movements. Ask whether you should modify activity, attend hospital monitoring or arrange delivery planning. Do not try to interpret the fluid measurement alone, because the plan depends on the whole clinical picture.

Call your maternity unit urgently if you think your waters are leaking, you have vaginal bleeding, painful regular contractions, severe abdominal pain or reduced fetal movements. Seek immediate help for severe headache, visual disturbance or sudden swelling with feeling unwell. These concerns need assessment before a planned scan.

Ask what showed the fluid was low, when the next growth scan is due, and whether fetal growth or blood-flow measurements need special attention. Clarify which movements are usual for your baby and the exact number to call if they change.
