When is a growth scan recommended for gestational diabetes?

Gestational diabetes can affect how the pregnancy is monitored. An ultrasound growth scan estimates the baby's size and looks at measurements including the abdomen. It may also assess amniotic fluid, which can be affected when glucose levels are difficult to control.

Your care team decides whether a scan is needed and how it fits with glucose reviews, blood pressure checks, fetal-movement advice, and other monitoring. The scan is an estimate, so the result is interpreted alongside your pregnancy history and current clinical findings.

Attend the scan and diabetes appointments offered by your maternity team. Bring your glucose record if asked, and take medicines exactly as prescribed. Ask what the measurements mean for your care and whether another scan or fetal monitoring is planned. Continue noticing your baby's usual movement pattern and follow the unit's instructions for reporting changes.

Call your maternity unit promptly for reduced or changed fetal movements, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, painful regular contractions, severe headache, visual changes, or sudden swelling. Seek urgent diabetes advice for symptoms of very high or very low glucose according to the plan given by your care team. A scheduled scan should not delay assessment.
