When is growth factor support recommended for febrile neutropenia?

Febrile neutropenia combines a fever with a low level of infection-fighting neutrophils. It can become serious quickly. Growth factors stimulate the bone marrow to make neutrophils, but they do not replace prompt assessment, cultures, antibiotics, fluids, or other treatment when infection is suspected.

The decision depends on the cause, the expected duration of neutropenia, blood pressure and breathing, organ function, the infection source, and other health factors. It is not needed for every episode.

If your oncology team has given you a fever threshold, follow it exactly and contact them immediately when reached. Do not self-start leftover injections or delay antibiotics while waiting for a blood count.

The team may check your blood count repeatedly, review recent chemotherapy, examine for an infection source, and decide whether growth factor support is suitable. They may also adjust future treatment or offer preventive support after recovery.

A fever during neutropenia is an emergency. Seek urgent medical care for fever, chills, confusion, dizziness, breathlessness, chest pain, severe weakness, or a new cough, sore throat, abdominal pain, or burning when passing urine.
