When is GP consultation recommended for varicose veins?

Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins, commonly in the legs, where blood return towards the heart is less efficient. Aching, heaviness, itching, ankle swelling, or discomfort after standing can be related to the veins. Darkened skin, eczema-like irritation, or a sore near the ankle may signal longer-term vein pressure and deserves assessment. A sudden painful, warm, red, or firm area along a vein is different from routine symptoms and should be assessed promptly.

Note when symptoms occur, whether they worsen with standing, and any changes in colour, warmth, swelling, or skin texture. Mention previous clots, vein procedures, pregnancy, medicines, and any wound that is slow to heal. Gentle walking and changing position can help comfort while you arrange care; avoid rubbing a tender, inflamed area. A GP may examine both legs and discuss whether further assessment or treatment is appropriate.

Seek urgent medical help for sudden one-sided leg swelling or pain, marked warmth or redness, a vein that becomes very tender and hard, or bleeding that does not stop with firm pressure and elevation. Chest pain, sudden breathlessness, coughing blood, or fainting requires emergency care.
