When is GP consultation recommended for swimmer's ear?

Swimmer's ear, also called otitis externa, is inflammation of the ear canal. Water, scratching, earbuds or other irritation can damage the canal's protective skin and allow inflammation or infection to develop. Pain may worsen when the outer ear is moved, and the canal can feel blocked, itchy or swollen. A GP can examine the canal and eardrum, check hearing changes and select drops that are suitable for the cause.

Keep the ear dry and avoid swimming until symptoms have settled. Do not insert cotton buds, fingers or other objects, and do not use leftover ear drops unless a clinician has confirmed they are suitable. A pharmacist can advise on pain relief. Tell the GP if you have diabetes, reduced immunity, previous ear surgery, a perforated eardrum or ear tubes, because these details affect which treatments are safe.

Seek urgent help for severe or rapidly worsening pain, fever with spreading redness, swelling behind the ear, facial weakness, severe dizziness, or a new marked hearing change. People with diabetes or a weakened immune system should seek prompt assessment for significant ear pain or discharge rather than waiting for self-care to work.
