When is GP consultation recommended for a stye?

A stye is a tender, localised lump near the edge of the eyelid, often caused by an inflamed or infected eyelid gland. It may produce redness, swelling, watering and a gritty feeling. Many styes settle with simple care, but a lump that persists or returns may need a closer examination to confirm the diagnosis. Arrange a GP appointment if swelling spreads across the eyelid, the eye becomes increasingly uncomfortable, or the problem interferes with seeing clearly.

Apply a clean, comfortably warm compress to the closed eyelid for several minutes at a time and repeat through the day. Wash your hands before touching the eye, keep the eyelid clean and pause eye makeup and contact lenses until it settles. Do not squeeze or pierce the lump, as this can spread inflammation. A pharmacist or GP can advise about treatment if symptoms are persistent or particularly uncomfortable.

Seek urgent medical help for severe eye pain, a change or loss of vision, pain when moving the eye, marked swelling around the eye, fever with spreading redness, or difficulty moving the eye. These features may indicate a problem beyond a simple stye and should not be managed by squeezing or waiting.

Ask whether the lump is a stye or another eyelid problem, how long to continue warm compresses, whether you should stop contact lenses, and what changes need urgent review.
