When is GP consultation recommended for rubella?

Rubella is a viral infection that can cause a fine rash, mild fever, swollen glands behind the ears or neck, and aching joints. The rash can resemble other illnesses, so symptoms alone cannot confirm the diagnosis. Rubella is especially important to discuss promptly during pregnancy because infection can harm an unborn baby.

Call the clinic before attending and mention the rash, possible exposure, vaccination history and any pregnancy. Avoid close contact with pregnant people and those who may not be protected until a clinician advises you. Rest, drink fluids, and use only symptom relief that is suitable for you. Do not rely on an online image to identify the rash.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, severe headache, confusion, a stiff neck, unusual drowsiness, a rapidly worsening illness, or signs of a serious allergic reaction. A pregnant person with a new rash or possible rubella exposure should seek prompt medical advice even if symptoms are mild.
