When is GP consultation recommended for restless legs syndrome?

Short answer
Arrange a GP consultation when restless legs symptoms repeatedly disturb sleep, affect daytime activities, or begin after a medicine or health change.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What restless legs syndrome feels like
Restless legs syndrome causes an urge to move the legs, often with crawling, pulling, aching or tingling sensations. Symptoms commonly appear during rest and may ease temporarily with movement, making it difficult to fall asleep or return to sleep. A GP can review the pattern, examine other causes of leg discomfort, and consider whether a health condition or medicine is contributing.
How to prepare for the visit
Keep a short diary showing when symptoms start, whether movement helps, how sleep is affected, and any caffeine, alcohol, exercise or medicine changes. Gentle stretching, walking and a regular sleep routine may help some people. Do not start iron or alter prescribed medicines without advice, because treatment should match the underlying cause and your test results.
When symptoms need faster care
Seek urgent help for a suddenly swollen, hot or painful leg, especially with breathlessness or chest pain. Arrange prompt medical review for new weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or severe back pain with leg symptoms. These features are not typical of restless legs syndrome.
Questions for your GP
Ask whether blood tests or a medicine review could clarify the cause, which sleep measures are suitable, and how to judge whether a proposed treatment is helping or worsening symptoms.

A suddenly swollen, hot or painful leg is not typical and needs prompt assessment, particularly with breathing symptoms.
