When is GP consultation recommended for pancreatitis?

Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas and can cause upper abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, fever and marked tenderness. Pain may worsen after eating or travel through to the back. Similar symptoms can arise from gallbladder, stomach or heart problems, so a clinician needs to assess the pattern rather than relying on symptoms alone. A GP may direct you to hospital assessment when the illness appears acute.

Arrange prompt medical advice and explain when the pain started, its severity, its location and whether it reaches the back. Mention vomiting, fever, yellowing of the skin, alcohol use, gallstones and regular medicines. Avoid alcohol and do not take extra pain medicine beyond label or clinician directions. If pain is severe, ask someone else to drive or use emergency transport.

Go to emergency care for severe worsening pain, repeated vomiting, fainting, confusion, difficulty breathing, a swollen abdomen, cold or clammy skin, or inability to keep fluids down. Yellow skin or eyes with significant pain also needs urgent assessment. Pancreatitis can worsen quickly, so these features should not wait for a routine appointment.

Ask whether hospital assessment is needed, which tests may clarify the cause, how to manage fluids and pain, and which medicines should be paused or continued. Ask what follow-up is needed if symptoms settle.
