When is GP consultation recommended for mumps?

Mumps is an infection that can cause tender swelling near the jaw or in front of the ears, often with fever, tiredness, headache and reduced appetite. A GP can assess the swelling, ask about vaccination and exposure, and consider other causes of enlarged glands. Contact the clinic before visiting because mumps can spread through respiratory droplets and close contact.

Stay away from school, work and close-contact settings until a clinician or local health guidance confirms when it is safe to return. Rest, drink fluids and choose soft foods if chewing is uncomfortable. Do not share cups, utensils or towels. Record when swelling and fever began, any exposure, vaccination history and medicines already taken.

Seek urgent care for severe headache with neck stiffness, confusion, a seizure, difficulty breathing or swallowing, repeated vomiting, severe abdominal pain, or sudden testicular pain or swelling. Urgent review is also needed if dehydration develops or a person becomes unusually drowsy. These symptoms can signal a complication or another illness requiring prompt assessment.
