When is GP consultation recommended for middle ear infection?

A middle ear infection develops behind the eardrum and may cause earache, pressure, reduced hearing, fever, irritability or disturbed sleep. A cold can block the passage that normally drains the middle ear. Examination is useful because outer-ear problems, trapped fluid and other causes of pain can feel similar, and treatment depends on the findings.

Offer fluids and rest, and use age-appropriate pain relief only as directed on the product label or by a clinician. Keep objects and cotton buds out of the ear. Do not put drops in an ear that is draining unless a healthcare professional has advised them. Note fever, pain, sleep, hearing and any discharge for the appointment.

Seek urgent help for swelling or redness behind the ear, an ear pushed outward, severe headache, stiff neck, facial weakness, marked dizziness, repeated vomiting or a child who is difficult to wake. Prompt review is also needed for worsening pain, ongoing discharge or new hearing loss.

Ask whether the eardrum shows infection or fluid, how pain should be managed, whether hearing needs review, and which changes mean the child or adult should be seen again.
