When is GP consultation recommended for MERS coronavirus infection?

MERS coronavirus infection can cause fever, cough and breathing difficulty, and may be more serious in people with certain long-term illnesses or reduced immunity. A GP or public-health service can assess symptoms alongside travel, healthcare, animal or close-contact exposure. Because respiratory infections spread through close contact, call before attending a clinic and follow local infection-control advice.

Stay home where possible, avoid close contact, improve ventilation and wear a well-fitting mask around others if advised locally. Cover coughs, wash hands and do not share personal items. Tell the clinician when symptoms began, where you have travelled, possible exposures and any underlying conditions. Do not attend work or a healthcare facility unannounced if MERS is suspected.

Call emergency services for severe or worsening breathlessness, chest pain, blue lips, confusion, collapse, inability to stay awake or signs of dehydration. A child, older adult or person with significant medical conditions may need prompt assessment even when symptoms initially seem mild.

Ask whether testing or monitoring is needed, how to isolate safely, which contacts should receive advice, and which breathing or hydration changes mean you should return urgently.
