When is GP consultation recommended for measles?

Measles is a contagious viral illness that can begin with fever, cough, a runny nose and sore, red eyes before a rash appears. A GP can assess the pattern, check for complications and advise how to protect babies, pregnant people and anyone with reduced immunity. Phone the practice before attending so staff can arrange advice while limiting exposure to others.

Stay home and avoid school, work and crowded places while you arrange advice. Keep distance from people who may be vulnerable, improve ventilation and wash hands. Do not share towels, cups or utensils. Tell the GP about the fever, rash, vaccination history, recent travel and contact with anyone who has a rash illness. A remote assessment may be suitable initially.

Seek emergency help for difficult breathing, bluish lips, marked drowsiness, confusion, a seizure, severe dehydration or a child who is unusually hard to wake. Urgent advice is also needed if fever or illness is worsening, the person cannot drink, or an infant, pregnant person or immunocompromised person may have been exposed.

Ask whether the symptoms fit measles, how long isolation should continue, whether close contacts need advice, and which warning signs should prompt emergency care.
