When is GP consultation recommended for laryngitis?

Laryngitis is inflammation of the voice box, often causing a hoarse, weak, or absent voice. A sore throat, dry cough, throat irritation, and discomfort when speaking can occur. Viral illness, voice strain, smoke, reflux, and other irritants may contribute. Persistent or recurrent hoarseness deserves assessment because the cause may not be a short-lived infection.

Rest your voice and speak softly when needed; whispering can also strain the voice. Drink fluids, avoid smoking and smoky rooms, and reduce alcohol or other irritants. A humid environment may feel soothing. Do not start antibiotics or use someone else’s medicine without clinical advice. Book a GP appointment if your voice is not improving, affects work, or repeatedly changes.

Get emergency help for difficulty breathing, noisy breathing, blue or grey lips, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing throat swelling, or severe weakness. Seek prompt assessment for coughing blood, a neck swelling, unexplained weight loss, or hoarseness that continues despite voice rest.

Ask what may be irritating your voice, whether your throat or voice box needs examination, how long to rest your voice, and when persistent hoarseness should be reviewed again.
