When is GP consultation recommended for insect bites and stings?

Most local reactions cause itching, redness, warmth or swelling around the affected skin. A GP can assess whether the reaction is unusually extensive, whether bacteria may have entered broken skin, and whether another skin problem is contributing.

Arrange advice if redness, pain or warmth continues to expand, pus develops, a red line travels away from the area, or fever and feeling unwell appear. Seek review for a bite that does not improve, repeated reactions, or a sting near the eye, inside the mouth or on the throat.

Wash the area with soap and water, apply a cool wrapped pack, and avoid scratching. Remove a visible bee stinger by scraping it gently rather than squeezing it. A pharmacist can advise on an antihistamine or cream that fits your age and medicines.

Take a photograph if the swelling is changing, and note the time of the bite or sting. Do not apply household chemicals or attempt to cut the skin.

Call emergency services immediately for swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, trouble breathing, wheezing, faintness, collapse, widespread hives, or sudden vomiting after a sting or bite. These can be signs of a severe allergic reaction.

Ask whether the skin looks infected, what treatment is appropriate, and how long swelling should take to settle. If you had a severe reaction, ask how to reduce risk from future stings and what emergency plan to follow.
