When is GP consultation recommended for head lice?

Head lice live close to the scalp and can cause itching, but itching alone does not confirm an infestation. A live louse found by wet combing is more useful evidence than nits attached to hair. Arrange a GP review when you cannot find live lice but symptoms continue, when several correctly used treatments have failed, or when the scalp has sores, crusting, pus, or painful swelling.

Check household members with a fine-toothed comb and treat only people with confirmed live lice. Follow the instructions for the chosen product or use repeated wet combing, paying attention to the timing of each session. Wash hands after handling the hair, avoid sharing combs and brushes, and tell close contacts so they can check themselves. A pharmacist can help select an appropriate option.

Seek prompt medical help if the scalp becomes hot, increasingly red, very painful, or drains pus, as scratching can allow a bacterial infection to develop. Get urgent advice for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or a child who is unusually sleepy or seriously unwell. These signs are not explained by uncomplicated head lice.
