When is GP consultation recommended for haemorrhoids?

Haemorrhoids, also called piles, are swollen blood vessels in or around the anus. They can cause bright red blood after a bowel movement, itching, soreness, mucus, or a lump. Internal haemorrhoids may bleed without much pain, while external swelling can be tender. Bleeding from the rectum has other possible causes, so a GP should assess it rather than assuming haemorrhoids are responsible.

Keep stools soft by drinking fluids, eating fibre-rich foods, and avoiding straining or sitting on the toilet for a long time. A pharmacist can suggest a suitable treatment for itching or constipation. Gentle washing and patting dry may reduce irritation. Make a note of the blood’s colour, how often it appears, bowel changes, pain, and any medicines that affect bleeding.

Seek emergency help for heavy or continuous bleeding, dizziness, fainting, black stools, severe abdominal pain, fever with worsening anal pain, or a rapidly swollen painful lump. Arrange prompt review for unexplained weight loss, a persistent change in bowel habit, or bleeding that keeps returning.

Ask whether the symptoms fit haemorrhoids, whether an examination or further testing is needed, which bowel-softening measures are suitable, and how to prevent repeated straining.
