Short answer

A GP consultation is recommended for a first suspected gout attack, repeated flares, uncertain diagnosis, or symptoms that are severe, prolonged, or changing.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why an assessment can help

Gout happens when urate crystals trigger inflammation inside a joint. Sudden pain, warmth, swelling and marked tenderness can fit gout, but other joint problems can look similar. A GP can review the pattern, examine the joint and decide whether testing or referral is appropriate. Assessment is especially useful when the pain affects the big toe, ankle, knee, wrist or another joint for the first time.

What to do before the appointment

Note when the pain began, which joint is affected, how quickly swelling developed and whether you have had earlier attacks. Bring a list of medicines and mention kidney problems, previous stones, diabetes or medicines that may affect urate. During a flare, rest the joint, keep it raised when practical and drink normally unless a clinician has given you fluid restrictions. Do not start or stop long-term gout medicine without medical advice.

When to seek urgent help

Seek urgent medical help for a hot, swollen joint with fever or chills, rapidly worsening illness, confusion, or feeling faint. Infection in a joint can resemble gout and needs prompt treatment. Urgent assessment is also sensible after an injury, when the joint cannot be moved, or when pain is severe and not easing.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the symptoms fit gout or another problem, whether a urate test or joint assessment is needed, and how to manage the current flare. You can also ask how to reduce future attacks, which medicines are suitable with your other conditions, and what warning signs should prompt an earlier review.

Questions people ask

Should I see a GP for a first gout attack?

Yes. A first attack should be assessed because infection and other joint conditions can cause similar pain and swelling.

Can I wait out every gout flare at home?

No. Repeated, severe, prolonged or changing attacks deserve medical review, and fever with a hot swollen joint needs urgent help.
