When is GP consultation recommended for goitre?

A goitre is an enlargement of the thyroid gland at the front of the neck. It may occur with an underactive thyroid, an overactive thyroid, inflammation, nodules, or another structural change. Some goitres do not alter hormone levels. During an assessment, the GP can feel the neck, ask about heat or cold intolerance, heartbeat changes, weight change, bowel habits, and family history, then arrange thyroid blood tests or imaging when appropriate.

Book a routine appointment for any persistent neck swelling, even if it is not painful. Note when you first noticed it, whether it changes with swallowing, and whether necklaces or collars feel tight. Bring a list of medicines and supplements. Do not begin iodine or thyroid supplements without professional advice, because the right approach depends on the thyroid’s function and the cause of the enlargement.

Seek urgent help if the swelling causes breathing difficulty, noisy breathing, inability to swallow, or rapidly worsening neck pressure. Request prompt medical review for a new hoarse voice, a firm or fixed lump, or a swelling that is enlarging. These signs need assessment; they do not by themselves identify the cause.

Ask which tests are needed, whether hormone treatment may help, how the swelling will be monitored, whether an endocrinology referral is appropriate, and which changes should be reported quickly.
