When Is GP Consultation Recommended for Gallstones?

Gallstones are solid deposits that can form in the gallbladder. Some cause no symptoms, while a stone blocking bile flow can cause steady pain in the upper right or upper middle abdomen, sometimes spreading toward the back or shoulder. Nausea and vomiting may accompany an episode. A GP can assess the pattern, examine your abdomen, and arrange tests or referral when the symptoms suggest gallbladder inflammation or a blocked duct.

Record when pain starts, where it is, how long it lasts, whether meals trigger it, and whether vomiting, fever, dark urine or pale stools occur. Drink fluids if you can and choose foods that do not aggravate symptoms. Do not take repeated doses of pain medicine beyond the label directions, particularly if you have liver, kidney or stomach problems. Bring a list of medicines and any previous scan results to the consultation.

Seek urgent care for severe or persistent abdominal pain, fever or chills, yellow skin or eyes, repeated vomiting, faintness, confusion, or pain with marked tenderness. These signs can indicate inflammation or impaired bile drainage and should not wait for a routine appointment. If symptoms recur after settling, arrange a GP review so the underlying cause can be assessed.
