When is GP consultation recommended for dry eye?

Dry eye may cause grittiness, burning, watering, redness, light sensitivity, or blurred vision that clears with blinking. It can be linked with screen use, dry air, contact lenses, eyelid problems, medicines, or other health conditions. Persistent symptoms deserve review because surface irritation can coexist with infection, inflammation, or a problem affecting the eyelids or vision.

Take regular breaks from close screen work, avoid direct airflow from fans or air-conditioning, and use contact lenses only as advised while the eye is irritated. Lubricating drops may help; choose preservative-free products if frequent use is needed, with pharmacist guidance. Note whether one or both eyes are affected, when blurring occurs, and any medicine or cosmetic exposure. Avoid rubbing your eyes and do not share eye drops.

Seek urgent medical care for sudden vision loss or a persistent change in vision, severe eye pain, marked light sensitivity, a very red eye with headache or nausea, injury, chemical exposure, or a painful red eye while wearing contact lenses. Sudden symptoms need faster assessment than longstanding mild irritation.

Ask what may be driving the dryness, whether your medicines or contact lenses contribute, which drops are appropriate, and whether an optometrist or ophthalmologist should assess the eye surface.
