When is GP consultation recommended for drug allergy?

Drug allergy can cause an itchy rash, hives, swelling, wheezing, or digestive symptoms after a medicine. A side effect, infection, or interaction can look similar, so the timing and pattern matter. A clinician can review the suspected drug, dose, other medicines, and previous exposure. Do not assume every unpleasant reaction is an allergy, but record it clearly because an inaccurate allergy label can affect future treatment choices.

Write down the medicine name, why you took it, when the symptoms started, and how they changed. Photograph a visible rash if it fades before review, and bring packaging or a prescription list. Contact a GP or pharmacist promptly for advice about the next dose; do not deliberately take the medicine again to test the reaction. Never stop a critical prescribed medicine without professional guidance unless emergency services instruct you to do so.

Call emergency services immediately for difficulty breathing, throat or tongue swelling, collapse, severe dizziness, blue or grey lips, or a rapidly worsening reaction. Urgent assessment is also needed for blistering or peeling skin, sores in the mouth or eyes, or a rash with fever. These patterns can signal a serious reaction and should not wait for a routine GP slot.

Ask whether the reaction sounds allergic, whether the medicine should be avoided, which alternatives are suitable, and how the suspected allergy should be documented for future prescriptions.
