When is GP consultation recommended for dementia?

Short answer
Book a GP consultation when memory, reasoning, language or daily activities are changing persistently or affecting safety, relationships or independence; sudden confusion needs urgent medical assessment.

What a GP can help clarify
Dementia describes an ongoing decline in cognitive abilities that interferes with everyday life. Similar problems can arise from depression, sleep disorders, medication effects, thyroid problems, infection or other conditions. A GP can review the pattern, health history and medicines, and decide whether tests or specialist assessment are appropriate.
Prepare for the appointment
Write down examples of missed appointments, repeated questions, getting lost, trouble managing money or changes in personal care. Note when each change started and whether it is gradually worsening. Take a current medicine list and, if possible, invite a trusted person who has noticed the changes. Do not stop prescribed medicines without advice.
When to seek urgent care
Seek urgent medical help for confusion that starts suddenly, especially with fever, a severe headache, weakness on one side, trouble speaking, a head injury, drowsiness or a seizure. Immediate assessment is also needed if a person with cognitive impairment is unsafe, has wandered, cannot eat or drink, or may have taken too much medicine.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what could be causing the changes, which assessments may be offered, and whether medicines or sleep problems could contribute. Discuss driving, falls, work, finances, home support and future planning. Ask what warning signs should prompt an urgent call and when the next review should occur.

Questions people ask
Does forgetfulness by itself establish dementia?
No. Forgetfulness has several possible causes, and a clinical assessment is needed to understand the pattern and its effect on daily life.
Can someone else speak to the GP first?
A family member or carer can share observations, although the GP may need to speak with the person experiencing the changes as well.
