When is GP consultation recommended for cold sores?

Cold sores are grouped blisters, often on or around the lips, that may tingle before they appear and then crust as they heal. Ask for a GP review if the diagnosis is unclear, outbreaks are frequent or unusually painful, sores are extensive, or healing is taking longer than expected. People with eczema, a weakened immune system, or serious ongoing illness should seek advice early because infection may spread more widely.

Wash hands after touching the sore, avoid picking the crust, and do not share drinks, lip products, towels, or utensils. Avoid kissing and oral sex while the sore is present, especially around newborn babies or people with reduced immunity. A pharmacist can advise on suitable relief, while a GP can decide whether an antiviral medicine is appropriate and when it should be started.

Get urgent medical advice if a sore is near the eye or you develop eye pain, light sensitivity, a red eye, or blurred vision. Seek prompt help for fever with widespread blisters, confusion, difficulty drinking, or rapidly worsening swelling. These features need assessment rather than home treatment alone.
