When is GP consultation recommended for chronic fatigue syndrome?

Short answer
Arrange a GP consultation when persistent exhaustion, unrefreshing sleep, post-exertional worsening, pain, or concentration problems limit your usual activities or remain unexplained.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding the symptom pattern
Chronic fatigue syndrome, also called myalgic encephalomyelitis, can involve a marked reduction in stamina, sleep that does not restore energy, post-exertional worsening, pain, dizziness, and difficulty thinking clearly. Similar symptoms can occur with anaemia, thyroid disease, infection, sleep disorders, medication effects, or mood conditions. A GP assessment helps consider these possibilities rather than relying on fatigue alone.
Prepare useful information
Keep a gentle symptom diary showing sleep quality, activity, delayed worsening after exertion, pain, dizziness, and the effect on work or personal care. Bring your medicine and supplement list and mention recent infections, menstrual or bleeding concerns, dietary changes, and other diagnoses. Pace activity within your available energy and avoid pushing through a marked flare while waiting for advice.
When symptoms need urgent care
Seek urgent help for chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, new one-sided weakness, new confusion, inability to stay awake, severe dehydration, or thoughts of self-harm. Rapid deterioration or inability to manage basic needs should be discussed with a clinician promptly.
What to discuss
Ask which conditions should be checked, how to record post-exertional worsening, how to balance activity and rest, whether a referral is appropriate, and which changes mean you should contact the practice sooner.

Questions people ask
Can fatigue alone confirm chronic fatigue syndrome?
No. Fatigue has many possible causes, so a clinician considers the wider symptom pattern and other explanations.
Why record delayed worsening?
Symptoms may increase after activity rather than during it, and this timing helps the GP understand your limits.
