Short answer

A GP consultation is recommended for new, worsening or bothersome urinary symptoms that may relate to benign prostatic hyperplasia, especially difficulty emptying the bladder.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How an enlarged prostate can affect urination

Benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, is non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate. Because the prostate surrounds part of the urine passage, enlargement can make the stream weak or hesitant, cause dribbling, increase daytime frequency or create a need to urinate at night. Urgency and the feeling that the bladder has not emptied can also occur.

Book a GP appointment if these symptoms disturb sleep, restrict travel, interfere with work or gradually become harder to manage. Similar symptoms can come from infection, medicines, bladder problems or prostate cancer, so an assessment should not rely on symptoms alone.

Prepare for the appointment

Write down when symptoms began, how often you pass urine, whether you rush or leak, and whether there is pain, fever or blood. A short bladder diary can reveal patterns. Tell the GP about medicines, caffeine or alcohol intake, constipation and any previous urinary or prostate problems. Do not stop prescribed medicines without advice.

The consultation may include questions, an examination and urine or blood checks, with further assessment if needed. Treatment choices depend on symptom impact, examination findings and your preferences. When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent help if you cannot pass urine, have severe lower-abdominal pain or a rapidly swollen bladder. Prompt assessment is also needed for visible blood in urine, fever or chills with urinary symptoms, severe back or side pain, or feeling faint or very unwell.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what may be causing the symptoms, whether tests are needed, how each treatment might affect ejaculation or blood pressure, and how soon improvement should be reviewed. Ask what changes require urgent care and whether reducing evening fluids or caffeine would be sensible for you.

Questions people ask

Does urinary trouble prove that I have BPH?

No. Urinary symptoms have several possible causes, so a GP assessment is needed to identify the likely explanation.

What is the most urgent BPH-related problem?
