When is GP consultation recommended for Bell's palsy?

Bell's palsy is weakness or paralysis of facial muscles caused by a problem affecting the facial nerve. It may alter a smile, eyebrow movement, taste, speech or the ability to keep one eye closed. Other conditions can also cause facial weakness, so a new change should be assessed rather than self-diagnosed.

Prompt review matters because treatment may be considered early in the illness, and an examination helps distinguish Bell's palsy from a stroke or another nerve problem. Tell the clinician exactly when the weakness began and whether it has spread or changed.

Protect an eye that does not close fully from dryness and dust, and avoid driving if vision or facial control makes it unsafe. Use only eye drops, ointment or an eye covering advised by a healthcare professional. Keep notes about ear pain, rash, hearing changes, dizziness, taste changes and any difficulty swallowing.
