When is glucose tolerance test recommended for gestational diabetes?

The test checks how your body handles a measured glucose drink over a set period. Blood samples are taken at planned points, and the pattern of results helps your maternity team assess whether gestational diabetes is present.

Some people are tested earlier when they have had gestational diabetes before, have known blood-sugar concerns, or have other factors that make early assessment useful. If early results are reassuring, repeat testing later in pregnancy may still be advised.

Follow the instructions from your maternity unit about fasting, medicines, and the timing of the appointment. Bring water and allow enough time to remain at the testing site between blood samples.

Tell the team if you feel faint, nauseated, or unwell during the test. Afterward, you can usually resume food and normal activities according to the instructions you were given.
