When is stomach removal surgery recommended for stomach cancer?

A gastrectomy removes part or all of the stomach, depending on where the tumour is located and how far it extends. Nearby lymph nodes may also be removed for examination. The surgeon chooses an approach that aims to remove visible cancer while preserving as much healthy stomach as is appropriate.

Surgery is only one part of the decision. Scans, endoscopy findings, biopsy results, general health, nutrition, and whether cancer has spread beyond an operable area all influence the recommendation. Medication treatment may be given before or after surgery, or another treatment plan may be more suitable.

Ask the cancer team to explain the tumour location, the proposed extent of surgery, and whether treatment before an operation is advised. A surgical review, nutrition assessment, and anaesthetic assessment help identify issues that can be addressed beforehand. Discuss how eating, weight, medicines, and daily activities may change during recovery.

Contact the care team promptly for repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, black or bloody stools, worsening abdominal pain, or increasing difficulty swallowing. Before treatment, these symptoms need assessment; after surgery, they may signal a complication requiring urgent review.

Ask: Would partial or total gastrectomy be needed? What findings make surgery suitable? Could treatment be given first? How will eating and nutrition be supported? How long might hospital recovery take? Which symptoms after discharge need urgent contact?
